Cetearyl alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols, principally cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. It is very different from volatile alcohols such as ethanol or denatured alcohol.
In creams and lotions it helps oil and water remain evenly dispersed, adds body and improves texture and spreadability. It also acts as an emollient, helping the skin feel softer and smoother.
