Lactic acid is used to adjust the pH of skincare products.

pH adjusters are crucial in skincare formulation to maintain the ideal pH level for skin health. The skin's natural pH typically ranges between 4.5 and 5.5, creating a slightly acidic environment that supports the skin's acid mantle —an important element of the skin's barrier function.

Certain skincare ingredients, diet, and even medications can disrupt this delicate balance leading to a weakened skin barrier, acne breakouts, rosacea flare-ups, or other irritating skin issues. 

Lactic acid also helps to stabilise other active ingredients whilst optimising the function of preservatives and antioxidants, to prolong the shelf-life of products.
