Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Although it can act as an exfoliating ingredient at appropriate concentrations and pH levels, in Illume its purpose is to adjust the formula's pH.
Correct pH is important for formula stability, ingredient performance and the effectiveness of the preservation system. The function of lactic acid therefore depends on how it is used within the finished formulation rather than simply on its presence in the ingredient list.
